The Los Angeles Chapter of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship (EPF) Palestine Israel Network (PIN) regrets Governor Brown's decision to sign AB2844 into law Saturday afternoon.
AB2844 was a frequently revised attempt to stifle criticism of the Israeli Occupation of Palestinian lands and the growing influence of the non-violent Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement as a catalyst for social change.
By ignoring the recommendations of his own Finance Office, as well as those of the ACLU and over one hundred free speech, human rights and religious organizations, the Governor has placed the State of California on a long and expensive path which we believe will end with AB2844 being confirmed as an unconstitutional violation of Californian's free speech rights.
Though the EPF PIN Los Angeles does not hold contracts with the State of California which would be subject to the vague wording of this bill, we will not hesitate to continue encouraging our members and friends to use the non-violent economic tools of boycott, divestment and sanctions against any government, company or organization whose goals, means or methods violate the human rights of others.
