A Service in a time of Confusion and Sadness

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good people do nothing. – Edmund Burk

hymn 538

Opening Prayer

Let us pray. O God, where hearts are fearful and constricted, grant courage and hope. Where anxiety is infections and widening, grant peace and reassurance. Where impossibilities close every door and window, grant imagination and resistance. Where distrust twists our thinking, grant healing and illumination. Where spirits are daunted and weakened, grant soaring wings and strengthened dreams. All these things we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen

O God, you have bound us together in a common life.  Help us, in the midst of our struggles for justice and truth, to confront one another without hatred or bitterness, and to work together with mutual forbearance and respect; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

psalm 13  (said in unison)

Luke 13

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

We often kill or ignore those who bring prophetic news.  Could it be because we are naturally inclined to guard against a change which would somehow but into our values?
