The EPF Young Adult Initiative (EPFYAI) at General Convention (GC) is designed to bring activist young adults together to observe and participate in the work of our General Convention. Each member of the EPF team will commit to preparing for General Convention by studying upcoming legislation related to peace and justice issues, monitoring legislation, speaking on behalf of issues of peace and justice, assisting with reporting of the work of peace making at convention, and participating in the caucusing sessions and special events of the Convention.
The ten YAI participants, ages 18-30, are expected to participate in the program for the duration of the General Convention in Indianapolis, IN, July 4-12, 2012. No exceptions. Funded by EPF, this program provides participants with free housing and a per diem for food, along with (if needed) a modest subsidy to help defray the cost of transportation to GC. (Participants are encouraged to solicit funds from their parishes, bishops and other groups to cover the cost of travel and other incidental expenses.) EPF Young Adult Initiative at GC in Past Years:
In 2006 EPF created the EPF Young Adult Presence (YAP) program. Twelve Bishops funded the project. EPF was able to provide transportation, housing and leadership.EPF’s Young Adult Presence was graced with ten incredible young adults coming from ten different dioceses across the country. They were full participants at General Convention, testifying before several committees including the Program, Budget and Finance. Based on their testimony around immigration, they were asked to write a resolution. They were full participants in the Eyes Wide Open exhibit, wrote articles for the Issues publication and were invaluable at the our booth space and the Sayre Award reception. The YAP team was Allison (Sandlin)Liles, Alex Kim, Molly Harrington, Lisa Bevevino, Kate Ketchum, Becky Zartman, Joe Johnson, Deborah Noonan, Sarah Nolan, and Joseph Shippen. Their leader was the Rev. Winnie Varghese.
In 2009 EPF’s the Young Adult Presence took on new leadership with the Rev’s Nicole Janelle and Valerie Bailey Fischer. The work of the Young Adult Initiative in the National and International Affairs Committee of General Convention became a vital force. Young Adult Presence Team included Joseph Matthews, Bradley McDonald, Catherine Healy, Michelle Harvey, Jessie (Smith) Vedanti, Anson Stewart, Nedgie Vixamar and Allison Voglesong.
