A Message from Dean Hayek
Regarding the Cathedral of the Incarnation and the Sabeel group of Maryland
The Cathedral of the Incarnation is the spiritual heart of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland. We share in the ministry of our Bishops and wider diocesan community. We welcome all people into our spiritual home.
We believe we are a place where all people are welcome, and that all people are children of God. Our mission through the Gospel is to do everything to support and respect the dignity of every human person.
As a Christian people, we believe reconciliation is core to our mission. We are to be reconcilers among the people in the communities where we live. This is true for the Cathedral of the Incarnation, for the Diocese of Maryland, for The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion. For nearly one hundred years the Church has maintained direct ministries for healing and education in the Holy Land. And since we are a connected church, we here in Baltimore are joined with Jerusalem; our Cathedral of the Incarnation is joined with the Cathedral of St. George’s. We are joined not by law, but by our relationships, our common prayer and our common mission for the peace of God on earth.
All of this supports and nurtures our profound respect for our brothers and sisters in the Jewish community and the Palestinian community.
On Tuesday, March 23, our Cathedral of the Incarnation will be the site of a meeting of the Sabeel group of Maryland. They will be hosting Dr. Mark Braverman, author of Fatal Embrace. We offer the use of our campus for those who share our work of reconciliation. We will never support language or actions that condone or promote hate and the denigration of any people. We work constantly to oppose the use of violence. I welcome an open and civil dialogue that helps all voices be heard. Sometimes in the course of such work critical things are said that can be hard to hear. Reconciliation requires such conversation, as well as seeking truth in our common life. I invite all to pray and act for peace here and across the globe.
Peace,
The Very Reverend Hal T. Ley Hayek
Dean, Cathedral of the Incarnation
